Inscription.
Views from this hilltop have attracted visitors for centuries. In the 1860's, they were the inspiration for local merchant and neighbor, Isaac Hale to raise funds for the purchase and donation of the land to the city for a public park. In the 19th and 20th centuries, important landmarks were the Cove in the center of town and the elegant Meeting House of the First Baptist Church in Providence. Over time, the cove was filled in and the land developed. The Meeting House which was among the largest building projects in New England when it was constructed, is now dwarfed by the tall buildings of the expanding city and the Capital Center but its steeple is still clearly visible.
