Crooked Lake Canal Stone
This lovely carved stone block came from the Crooked Lake Canal (1833-1877) that connected Penn Yan to Dresden along the north side of Outlet Creek. Twenty-seven locks were required to negotiate the drop of 270 feet through the 8 mile gorge between Keuka Lake (Crooked Lake) and Seneca Lake. During its heyday, the Outlet Creek was "the most heavily industrialized creek in the East." Birkett Mills, the world’s largest producer of buckwheat products, is the only mill still in operation; however, the remains of many mills, ponds and races can still be seen all along the outlet. This stone is on loan from Friends of the Outlet, Inc.
