First Solar Battery Installation

Near this site the Bell Solar Battery invented at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, converting the sun's light into electrical energy and later used to power communications from earth vehicles voyaging in outer space received its first practical test. Placed in service October 4, 1955, the installation here provided power by which rural telephone lines were operated.
Erected 1961 by Dixie Chapter Telephone Pioneers of America.
