1. Pioneer Cemetery Marker
Inscription. The village of Brandy Camp. Elk County, PA was settled in 1818 by Isaac and Lucy Horton. In 1822, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Nichols, Jr. purchased 200 acres of land to the south of the Hortons and moved his family there. Jonathan Nichols, Jr., a Harvard graduate, was the first physician and preacher in the Little Toby Valley. In 1837. Jonathan Nichols, Jr.'s father died, and was buried in the corner of the farm. The little plot became a burial ground for family and friends, and is known today as Pioneer Cemetery.
Jonathan Nichols, Jr. officiated the marriage between his daughter Rhoda Nichols and Chauncey Brockway, Sr. in 1816. Chauncey, Rhoda, and their infant daughter Louisa emigrated from Broadalbin, NY to Caledonia, PA in the fall of 1817, becoming the first Brockways to settle in the area. Chauncey, Rhoda, and family moved to Brandy Camp in 1821. Two of the graves in Pioneer Cemetery belong to Revolutionary War veteran Consider Brockway and his wife Keziah Ferry. Consider and Keziah Brockway were the parents of Chauncey, James, and Alonzo Brockway, James and Alonzo Brockway would settle several miles down Little Toby Creek in 1822, where the town of Brockway now stands.

Nichols, Sr. was also a veteran of the American Revolution. Jonathan Nichols, Jr. convinced a young Asaph M. Clarke to go into medicine. Asagh was the son of Philetus Clarke and his wife Penelope Goddard, who settled in Brockport in 1821 and built the first sawmill on Little Toby Creek. Jonathan Nichols, Jr. officiated the wedding between Asaph M. Clarke and his daughter Rebecca Nichols in 1831. In 1836, Asaph and Rebecca Clarke would purchase a large amount of property in the valley around James and Alonzo Brockway, and lay out the town of Brockwayville in lots and street Dr. Asaph M. Clarke is known as the father of Brockway.

There are additional burial areas, some with depressions, behind the four marked graves. A child grave has been identified, which may be the grave Jonathan Nichols Brockway who was born in 1825 to Chauncey and Rhoda Brockway but died 14 days later.
