Acadian House
Built 1971
This building, which once served as the Opelousas Tourist Information Center, was constructed to resemble a typical Cajun home of the 1800s. Popular from 1765 to 1900, the Acadian House was made from Louisiana Cypress.

Pigeonnier
c. 1970s
Nearby is a tall wooden structure that was also replicated as a pigeonnier. French for 'dove house, these buildings were popular in France where the gentry were permitted to keep pigeons. In Colonial Louisiana, the pigeonnier was a common site on 18th and 19th century French-Creole plantation where they were considered status symbols. While their original purpose was to house pigeons, in later years they were used simply for grain storage.
