Inscription.

At the issuance of grounds, during the new northern city expansion in 1625, brewer Sijbolt Jacobs obtained a reasonably sized plot alongside the harbor. Because there was no shortage of space and money, the build

could be perpendicular to the street. This is how in 1631, a house arose with a rather astonishing amount of 17 up- and downstairs windows on the side of the street. The building got a refined Flemish step gable, but a front door was missing; something that was not uncommon in Groningen during that time. Only after the “fashion of grand front doors” was brought over to Groningen from Holland, this inconvenience was fixed. The narrow downstairs windows were also replaced by broader ones, but the sculpted shell shapes above these windows were unharmed.

Responsible for the renovation was lieutenant Jurjen Wessels Commenes, his daughter Anna or his granddaughter Maria Lant. At the sale of the property in 1721, which until then had been in the same family for 73 years, it turned out that it was split into multiple residences that were partly inhabited by Mr. Lijphart and Mr. Elama. Even when the building got a front door after the renovation, it is safe to assume that the inhabitants would have used the backdoor frequently. This is because a stable for six horses, a coach house, and a conservatory were located there, which had their entrance at the Marktstraat. And that wasn’t all, according to multiple sales contracts. There were also a few houses on the Marktstraat, that belonged to the property. No wonder that among the people that owned the property were a Mayor,

a preacher and a few lawyers and notaries.

In the course of the 20th century, the property got a different function. Number 3 became the extension of the nautical boarding school “Admiraal van Kinsbergen” in 1962. It was supposed to offer only night lodgings, but in 1963 commander Heikens wrote that “It has turned out that multiple students gain access to the property during the day”. Since 1973, the children that used the day lodgings of the Foundation of Childcare Groningen were allowed to be on the property during the day. The smaller Number 1 became an office until it was bought by a private owner in 1977.
