De Wijnaert
In the Middle Ages, De Wijnaert was a popular name for Wijdenaard, the old name of the current Bisdomplein. In the Middle Ages, an 'aard' was a mooring place where ships loaded and unloaded their cargo. 'Wijdenaard' literally means 'wide berth'. The famous chronicler Marcus Van Vaernewijck indicated in the sixteenth century that it was mainly tons of wine that were unloaded and that there were also 'convenient cellars' around the square for this purpose. The name was therefore often corrupted into the 'Wijnaert'.
