Key West in Monroe County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Mel Fisher and 1622 Fleet Shipwreck Memorial
This plaque is placed here to commemorate the lost souls aboard the galleons Nuestra Senora de Atocha, Santa Margarita and the other ships of the 1622 Fleet that found their final resting place on the ocean floor off Key West, Florida in the midst of a devastating hurricane on September 6th of 1622 and to celebrate the perseverance and dedication of Mel Fisher and his team of explorers in their quest to motivate humankind in the search for and discovery of this rich history. They were successful in locating these two lost galleons and returning their treasures to the museums of the world and to the stream of commerce.
Far greater than the parts of these tumbled and scattered shipwrecks are the heritage of a vanished culture, society and empire and the saga of the ambitious spirits of those who participated in the expedition to locate these galleons. They share with us all the joy of adventure, romance, history and knowledge.
