Wilkinson's Expedition
(Indian War)
— July - August 1791 —
To rescue women and children taken captive by angry Indian warriors, the U.S. called, in Kentucky District, for volunteers. 800 men, many of them Revolutionary War veterans, at once responded, each bringing his own horse and gun. Of these, 525 were picked: Cream of the Crop, --the very flower of pioneer Kentucky manhood. Smartly led, this task-force overcame distance, swamps and unbridged rivers; surprised and destroyed this great den of raiders; and got this band to make peace! The cost of human lives was only twelve.
Some may jeer, --may yearn for bigger and bloodier battles, with scores killed and many reduced to suffering derelicts. But no war veteran is apt to do so. Certainly, no mother of sons ever would. President Washington was sorry even any Indians had to be killed. But of the Kentuckians who here so well served our country, and were so merciful and well-behaved, he told Congress: "(Their) enterprise, intrepidity, and good conduct are entitled to peculiar commendation." May his words forever echo down through the ages!
