O'Connell Street for ballroom dancing,
'The Young Hearts' on the Adelaide
Road for quick steps and waltzes
and 'The Ierne' for cιilν. I went to the
'Crystal Ballroom' off Grafton Street
and to 'The Pallas' on O'Connell Street.
Every Saturday night I'd dance at
'The Olympic Ballroom' off Pleasants
Street. Fellas would ask me out to the
pictures and I went with my pal to
'The Royal' every Friday and also to
'The Gaiety','The Olympia' and
'The Queens'. That was the late 1940's.

the street narrower.
The surface was all
cobblestones. When
winter weather made them
freeze, horses struggled
to climb. Sparks flew
from their hooves.

Methodone?' they asked.
It was their way of asking me
if I had ever taken drugs or
was a drug addict. I was on
Methodone - Yes, but I did have
a good record of clean urine and
letters from the doctor saying
I was clean. We had maximum
points and things looked good.
So I told the truth.

But if you don't maintain
a place it will fall into
disrepair and over time
the people living there will
become demoralised.
The place will then go back to
the way it was before.

father. Sometime in
the 1960's he caught me
mitching from school and
gave me an awful hiding.
Ripped the clothes off me,
lashed me with the belt and
punched me in the eyes.

something and you have it -
then no matter what it is,
I think you deserve it.
We are only caretakers for
the things we have. I am
lucky to have this flat. It is
all I really have and
I really adore it. I think
I take care of it the best I can.

during the 1st World War. He got some
medals but when he left the army
he pawned them and never redeemed
them. My brother, he was in the British
Airforce during the 2nd World War.
My father was made to know about it.
He used to say to my mother, 'I can't
get a word out of him'. My brother got
the Burma Star and all, but he never
even wrote away for his medal. He said
he didn't need medals to remind him.

up the blinds and open the
window to let air in. Next thing
you see someone gawking in,
waving in and taking snaps.
Hello. one says. How are you
sir? Good, I says. Would you
like a rasher sandwich?

decided this was enough.
One day after mass, she arrived
home and told her husband
that the priest said no one of
childbearing age should stop
having children. Sometime later
she had another. Both she and
the baby died during the birth.
They were buried together.
