"Mark was a Civil War veteran, serving with Company F, 14th US Heavy Artillery (a colored regiment). He came to California about 1887 to escape the poverty of his home state. By working for cement contractors for a long time, he became master of the business and took contracts on his own account and became himself an employer of men."
