First deployed during the Vietnam War, and later during the 1991 Gulf War's Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the M728 CEV was based on the M60A1 Patton Main Battle Tank. The hydraulically operated dozer blade allows it to be effectively used as an armored bulldozer. Its primary purpose is clearing obstacles such as minefields, walls, fences, roadblocks, and bunkers, or for destroying buildings. The M728 is not generally meant to be used in anti-personnel or anti-tank warfare. During Operation Desert Storm, the M728 was unable to keep up with the M1 Series Abrams Tanks. Due to this, many maneuver units left the M728 behind instead of allowing it to slow their advance.

This was the heavy combat engineer vehicle of the Louisiana National Guard's 1088th Engineer Battalion from the 1970s to the early 1990s.
