Becoming interested in aviation he made his first flight June 6 1911. He entered the Open Aviation Meet at Chicago in August of the same year and won the duration prize.

He started from Sheepshead Bay New York Sept 17 1911 to fly across the continent and arrived at Pasadena California Nov 5 1911 covering a distance of 4231 miles in actual flying time of 3 days 10 hours and 4 minutes from the Atlantic to the Pacific
