Inscription. Mining and Fort Douglas have been linked historically since 1863. Colonel Patrick E. Connor was the first commanding officer of the post newly established by President Abraham Lincoln to maintain contact between the East and West during the Civil War. He also advanced exploration for minerals in the Oqurrh Mountains across the valley.

Mineral discoveries by his soldiers in Bingham Canyon prompted Connor to organize Utah's first mining district. Thus he is credited as the "Father of Utah Mining."

It was within that first mining district that a vast deposit of copper ore was discovered. This led to the development of Utah's greatest mineral resource, Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon Mine.

A long history of support for the University of Utah in ways large and small continues with the restoration of Building #11 at Fort Douglas and sponsorship of the Kennecott Society of Scholars, dedicated to the advancement of excellence.

Erected by Kennecott.
