La palma real puertorriqueña fue originalmente descrita en 1901 por el botánico Orator F. Cook. Comienza a florecer después de siete años, produciendo flores de color amarillo cremoso de ambos sexos con un néctar que atrae a las abejas. Tolera aire contaminado, crece en distintos tipos de suelos y sus raíces no ocasionan daño a pavimentos. Su uso es primordialmente ornamental aunque también se utiliza para alimentar cerdos y otros tipos de ganado.
