La palma real puertorriqueña fue originalmente descrita en 1901 por el botánico Orator F. Cook. Comienza a florecer después de siete años, produciendo flores de color amarillo cremoso de ambos sexos con un néctar que atrae a las abejas. Tolera aire contaminado, crece en distintos tipos de suelos y sus raíces no ocasionan daño a pavimentos. Su uso es primordialmente ornamental aunque también se utiliza para alimentar cerdos y otros tipos de ganado.

The Puerto Rican Royal Palm was originally described in 1901 by botanist Orator F. Cook. It begins flowering after seven years old, producing flowers of both sexes with nectar that attracts honey bees. It tolerates air pollution well and grows in a variety of soil types. Its roots do not damage paved areas. Although its use is primordially ornamental, the fruits are fed to pigs and other livestock.
