barns built at the University of Illinois' Experimental Dairy Farm. The two-level, 60-foot-diameter barn was built on a concrete foundation without the use of scaffolding, at a cost of $2,000 (more than $62,000 in 2023 dollars). It originally contained a workshop, stalls and food bins (some of which still remain) for the farm's horses. An original water spigot and concrete trough also remain. The barns were the creation of Wilber J. Fraser, the first head of the Department of Dairy Husbandry, and his College of Agriculture colleague H. C. Crouch, whose articles helped popularize round barns in the Midwest.
