last round barn built at the University of Illinois' Experimental Dairy Farm. At 70 feet in diameter, it is the largest of the three and also the most expensive to build: $11,000 ($341,000 in 2023 dollars). A reinforced concrete silo sits in the center, and 40 stanchions encircle it. The barns were the creation of Wilber J. Fraser, the first head of the Department of Dairy Husbandry, and his College of Agriculture colleague H. C. Crouch, whose articles helped popularize round barns in the Midwest in the early 1900s.
