Britse zeevaarder en cartograaf. Hij is bekend geworden door twee ontdekkingsreizen naar Noord-Canada, op zoek naar de Noordwestelijke Doorvaart. Tijdens zijn tochten maakte hij gebruik van metingen aan de maan die nog niet eerder daadwerkelijk waren toegepast.

(English translation:)

British navigator and cartographer. He is known for two voyages of discovery to Northern Canada, in search of the Northwest Passage. During his travels he made use of measurements of the moon that had never actually applied before.

Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, during the course of which he was the first European to discover Baffin Bay situated between Canada and Greenland. He was also responsible for exceptional surveys of the Red Sea and Persian Gulf on behalf of the East India Company.

Legacy: Baffin Bay and Baffin Island were named in William Baffin's honour, and he is responsible for the names of several of their features… Besides his geographical discoveries, Baffin is celebrated for the scrupulous accuracy of his many scientific and magnetic observations. His reckoning of longitude at sea by lunar distances on 26 April 1615 is the first of its kind on record.
