Nació el 11 de enero de 1842 en Cabo Rojo. Se distinguió como poeta, periodista, ensayista, dramaturgo, sociólogo, político en historiador. Se considerada el primer historiador puertorriqueño y, en el 1903 fue nombrado historiador oficial de Puerto Rico. Labor que desempeñó hasta su muerte el 5 de noviembre de 1912 en San Juan.
He was born on January 11, 1842 in Cabo Rojo and became a distinguished poet, journalist, essayist, playwright, sociologist, politician and historian. He is considered the first Puerto Rican historian. In 1903 he was named the official historian of Puerto Rico, serving until his death on November 5, 1912 in San Juan.
