Joke Smit
Joke Smit gave the impetus to the second wave of feminism in the Netherlands in 1967 with the article The Unease with Women. She was a journalist at a time when few mothers worked, and she wrote about the problems she encountered. Recognition among women was great. This led to the foundation of the action group Man Vrouw Maatschappij (Man Woman Society), which argued that emancipation was something for women and men together. She advised the government to set up the Emancipation Committee and, as a member of it, had great influence on emancipation policy, a term she had coined herself. On her tombstone at Zorgvlied, under 'Feminist', the message 'Sisters, be courageous, sharp-witted, united' is written.
