Volgens de vroegere Indonesische president Soekarno was Raden Adjeng Kartini 'de heldin van de nationale vrijheid'. In 1964 verklaarde hij haar geboortedag 21 april tot nationale feestdag. Sindsdien wordt Hari Kartini gevierd. Kartini werd volgens Javaanse traditie vanaf haar twaalfde in afwachting van een gearrangeerd huwelijk thuis opgesloten. Dit weerhield haar er niet van kennis tot zich te nemen en zich in te zetten. voor de achtergestelde positie van de Indonesische vrouw en voor nationale onafhankelijkheid. Ze schreef onder pseudoniem artikelen, correspondeerde met Nederlandse welgestelden en richtte aan huis een meisjes- school op. holiday. Hari Kartini (“Kartini Day”) has been celebrated ever since. According to Javanese tradition, Kartini was locked up at home from the age of twelve pending an arranged marriage. This did not prevent her from learning and dedicating herself to the disadvantaged position of Indonesian women and national independence. She wrote articles under a pseudonym, corresponded with well-to-do Dutch people and founded a girls school at home. After her early death, just after the birth of her first child, more girls schools were established in Java. Over the years, her message for personal freedom, to live the life she wanted, was heard more and more.

was a prominent Indonesian activist who advocated for women's rights and female education.

After her death…Kartini's letters were published in a Dutch magazine and eventually, in 1911, as the works: Out of Darkness to Light and Women's Life in the Village. Her birthday is now celebrated in Indonesia as Kartini Day in her honor, as well as multiple schools being named after her and a fund being established in her name to finance the education of girls in Indonesia. She was interested in mysticism and opposed polygamy.
