Helena y Stefan pertenecían a la resistencia polaca y estaban comprometidos con la lucha en contra de los nazis, aún al reisgo de sus vidas. Durante tres largos años hasta el día de la liberación en 1945, Helena, su hermano Stefan y su mamá, Agnieszka, escondieron a cuatro judíos detrás de una pared en el apartamento que compartían con un oficial alemán del ejército de ocupación. A pesar de haber sido delantados, arrestados y golpeados, ellos no entregaron a los judíos escondidos.
