Luego de que los nazis descubrieron en 1942 que en el Convento Banneux Notre-Dame se ocultaban y refugiaban niños judíos, la Madre Superiora le encomendó a Marie-Therese Leloup ocultar y cuidar a la niña judía Mariette Bermowitz hasta el final de la guerra. Para ésto contó con la ayuda de otros miembros del convento, quienes también arriesgaron sus vidas al declarar a los nazis que la pequeña era una huérfana encontrada en las calles. Al finalizar la guerra, Meritte y su padre, únicos sobrevivientes de su familia reencontraron.

"…Estas son personas fuera de lo común en un mundo lleno de crueldad y merecen ser reconocidas como las personas que Dios espera que nosotros seamos".
