Lolita Tizol Laguardia
1890 - 1933
Nace en Ponce el 19 de junio de 1890. Desde pequeña mostró gran aptitud musical , interesándose por el estudio del violín. Su talento le mereció una beca del Comisionado de Instrucción para proseguir estudios de música. Estudia pedagogía en Alabama, donde se diploma como maestra principal y recibe una especialización en ciencias domésticas.

Se dedicó con gran fervor a la enseñanza en Juana Díaz, Coamo y Ponce. Fue Principal de Escuela en Ponce. Su compromiso con los niños le llevó a convertirse en la primera principal en establecer el programa de Comedor Escolar y más tarde, el programa de desayuno para niños de escasos recursos. Fue miembro de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Ponce.

Muere en Ponce el 25 de abril de 1933.

Lolita Tizol-Laguardia was born in Ponce on June 19, 1890. She demonstrated an aptitude for music from an early age and became interested in violin. Ms. Tizol taught with a great fervor in the towns of Juana Díaz, Coamo, and Ponce. She was a school principal in Ponce, and her commitment to children led her to establish the School Lunchrooms program and, later, the breakfast program for low-income children. She was also a member of the Ponce Symphony Orchestra.

Lolita Rizol-Laguardia died in Ponce on April 25, 1933.

Concha Meléndez
1895 - 1983
Nace en Caguas, el 21 de enero de 1895 Obtiene su bachillerato en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en 1922. Alcanza su grado de maestría en la Universidad de Columbia (1926) y su doctorado en Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad Autónoma de México (1932). Funda la cátredtra de Literatura Hispanoamericana de la UPR y dirige el Departamento de Estudios Hispánicos de 1937 a 1942.

En 1953, adiene al retiro con el título de Cadrática Eméricta. Se dedicó a la investigación, a la colaboración en revistas, a la critica literaria y al cultivo de su prosa. Fue la primara mujer en ser miembro de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española. Su obra literaria es una de las más fecundas y reconocidas.

Fallece en San Juan el 26 de junio de 1983.

2. Concha Meléndez section of the marker
Puerto Rico in 1922. Subsequently, she earned a Master's degree from Columbia University (1926) and a Doctorate degree in Philosophy and Literature from Universidad Autónoma de México (1932). Concha Meléndez founded the Department of Hispanic American Literature of the University of Puerto Rico and acted as head of the Department of Hispanic Studies from 1937 to 1942.

She retired in 1957 and was awarded the title of Professor Emerita. Concha Meléndez devoted herself to research, literary criticism, to make contributions to journals, and to prose. She was the first female Member of the Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española. Her literary work has been prolific and well recognized.

Concha Meléndez died in San Juan on June 26, 1983.

Pilar Barbosa de Rosario
1898 - 1997
Nace en Bayamón el 4 de julio de 1898. Obtuvo su bachiller en Educación en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en 1924, y su maestría en Artes en 1925. Cursá sus estudios doctorales en Hisotria en la Universidad de Clark en Worcester, Massachusetts.

En 1929 funda el Departamento de Historia y Estudios Sociales de dicha universidad, liderándolo hasta 1943. Continúa su labor docente hasta 1967.

Miembro de la Real Academica de la Historia y de la Academia de las Artes y Ciencias de Puerto Rico. Posee una fecunda obra historiográfica.

1993, fue deignada Historiadora Oficial de Puerto Rico, cargo de cardeter vitalicio.

Fallece en San Juan el 22 de enero de 1997.

Pilar Barbosa de Rosario was born in Bayamón in 1898. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Puerto Rico in 1924, and a Master's degree in Arts in 1925. She pursued graduate studies in History to attain a doctoral degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

In 1929, she founded and directed the Department of History and Social Studies in said University until 1943, and continued teaching until 1967.

Pilar Barbosa de Rosario was a member of the Real Academia de la Historia and of the Académia de las Artes y Ciencias de Puerto Rico. She had a prolific historiographical work.

In 1998, she was appointed the Official Historian of Puerto Rico, an office which is held for life.

Pilar Barbosa died in San Juan on January 22, 1997.

Margot Arce de Vázquez
1904 - 1990
Nace en Caguas, el 10 de marzo de 1904. Ingresa a la Universidad de Puerto Rico en 1922 y obtiene un bachillerato en Matemáticas y Español. Se traslada a España para continuar estudios graduos en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. En 1930 obtiene su doctorado en Filosofía y Letras.

4. Margot Arce de Vázquez section of the marker
Puerto Rico y funda el Departamento de Estudios Hispanos, el que dirige de 1943 a 1965. Funda la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española, y en 1970, esta le honra con el título de Profesora Emérita.

Autora de una aplica labor ensayistica, fue editora de las obras de Palés Matos y coautora de antologías de prosa y poesia puertorriqueña.

Muerte en San Juan, el 14 de noviembre de 1990.

Marco Arce de Vázquez was born in Caguas on March 10, 1904. She entered the University of Puerto Rico in 1922 and earned a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and Mathematics. She then moved to Spain to pursue graduate studies at the Complutense University of Madrid and, in 1930, she earned a Doctorate degree in Philosophy and Literature.

She taught at the University of Puerto Rico and founded the Department of Hispanic Studies, which she headed from 1948 to 1965. She also founded the Academia Puertorriqueña de Lengua Española which named her profesor emerita in 1970.

Ms. Arce de Vázquez wrote many essays, edited the works of Luis Patés Matos, and re-authored anthologies of Puerto prose and poetry.

Margot Arce de Vázquez died in San Juan on November 14, 1990.
