1. Saint Peter's Episcopal Church. Church website entry:
Established in 1822, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church has played an important part in diocesan and community life. In its formative years, St. Peter’s used the “free church” along with the Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists. In 1824 St. Peter’s erected a frame church on the grounds facing Main Street. That church burned in 1864 (as an indirect result of Union occupation of Washington). St. Peter’s sits in an historic churchyard bordered by stately oaks and marked by plantings of rare trees. In the churchyard is the grave of Col. James Bonner, founder of the town of Washington.(Submitted on June 20, 2023, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
2. National Register of Historic Places Nomination.
Saint Peter's Episcopal Church began in a wooden building consecrated in 1824 by the Rt. Rev. John Stark Ravenscroft, first Episcopal bishop of North Carolina. The present structure, prudently rebuilt in brick, was begun in 1868. First services were held there in 1873. This important gable end Gothic style building with lancet windows and corbeled detail is dominated by an off-center tower. The tower, rising in four stages, features Gothic detail similar to that of the main body of the church.(Submitted on June 20, 2023, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
