The Sailor honors the patriotism and gallantry of all the men and women from the State of South Carolina who served in the United States Navy during World War II.
The Sailor bronze sculpture, and plaza is a gift from Henry W. Crede, Signalman 2nd Class, who served in the United States Navy from 1940-1945, born in Columbia, South Carolina and a resident since 1945 of Boston, Massachusetts.
