Death of 6 men who watched over the Great Lakes remembered. Excerpt:
Sunday, April 23 marks the 143rd anniversary of the worst tragedy suffered by members of the service in the line of duty. Six crewmembers, known as surfmen, perished in the waters off Pointe Aux Barques during a rescue attempt, not far from where the historic Life-Saving Station stands near Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse today.
