In 1770 an act was passed "for vesting the school-house in Edenton in trustees." The preamble is as follows: "Whereas, the inhabitants of the town of Edenton, for the promoting the education of youth and encouragement of learning, have, by voluntary subscription, purchased two lots and erected a convenient school-house thereon in an agreeable and healthy situation in the said town: Therefore, etc." The charter
