Hamburg in Erie County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Fresh Air Mission
In 1894, the Fresh Air Mission was built on this site as a hospital devoted to the care of infant children afflicted with Cholera, a toxin caused by poor sanitation. In the last quarter of the 19th century, the sickness became a serious health problem in many American cities resulting in more than one very grave epidemic. The mission complex included a combination administration building and baby lifesaving station, a hospital, hotel and spring house. The building later became home to a YWCA in 1910, the Lake Shore Manor Hotel In 1931 and the popular Foit's Lakeside Restaurant in 1935. It was later demolished in 2007.
