1. Beach Hammock Marker
Inscription. Across the Intracoastal Waterway is Jupiter Island. It was part of an ancient offshore sand bar which became exposed when the sea level dropped.
Protected from salt spray and yet close enough to the ocean to receive its warming effects, the island has vegetation that is mostly tropical in nature. These areas are called coastal beach hammocks having such trees as Gumbo-Limbo, Stopper, and poisonwood.

At one time, many of these islands in South Florida had beach hammocks. However, extensive development has destroyed most of them.
