Frank Hamilton
Frank Hamilton, a great-great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton, was the Superintendent of Parks for New York during World War I. In 1906, Wilcox Park nearly doubled in size when the seven-acre Brown Farm was added.
Hamilton was commissioned to design this new large addition in keeping with Warren Manning's original design. The Brown Farm added varied topography to the Park including two knolls and a depression.
Hamilton's plan incorporated the depression by creating the half-acre Wilcox Park Pond. One knoll, originally called Lemon Hill includes the oldest tree in the Park, the White Oak. It is now the overlook, with its granite bench on top. The other knoll, originally called Cherry Hill, overlooks the Bandstand.
Water Source
The water for the Pond and Fountains originally came from the Smith Quarry on Quarry Hill on Granite Street. It flowed downhill through a half mile of underground pipe. Today, the water comes from a groundwater well that also feds the Park's irrigation system.
