Length: 28-30', length can vary
Beam: 6'3"
Whaleboats were an essential piece of equipment for a ship like the Charles M. Morgan. When a whale was spotted, the whaleboats would be lowered into the water, and a crew of six people would climb down into each boat. The crew would row towards the whale with five long oars. The harpooner would row in the bow, or front, of the boat, ready to dart a harpoon into the whale. An officer would be in the back, or stern, with the steering oar. rowing was the main form of propulsion, but these whaleboats also have a mast and rig for sailing.
These whaleboats are part of a fleet that was built for the Charles M. Morgan's 38th Voyage in 2014. Each one was built by a different boatbuilding organization, which is why each one is slightly different. Our whaleboats are currently used to teach rowing and sailing to the public.
