De straat is vernoemd naar de oude gemeente-school van Nieuwer-Amstel, waartoe dit gedeelte van de stad tot 1896 behoorde. De oorspronkelijke naam van de school was Jacob Maris en later werd dat de R.K. Sint Corneliusschool voor Gewoon Lager Onderwijs.

The street is named after the old municipal school of Nieuwer-Amstel, to which this part of the city belonged until 1896. The original name of the school was “Jacob Maris” and later it became the R.K. Sint Corneliusschool voor Gewoon Lager Onderwijs (“R.K. Saint Cornelius School for Normal Primary Education”).
