The street is named after the old municipal school of Nieuwer-Amstel, to which this part of the city belonged until 1896. The original name of the school was “Jacob Maris” and later it became the R.K. Sint Corneliusschool voor Gewoon Lager Onderwijs (“R.K. Saint Cornelius School for Normal Primary Education”).
