1. Base Hospital Marker
Inscription. The base hospital, built in 1938, was the second building completed at the Sacramento Air Depot. The hospital provided services to all depot personnel, including the delivery of the first baby born on the base in 1939. The hospital building conveys comfort and reassurance through its Classical detailing, such as the Corinthian capitals on the pilasters at the entry door, the shell and egg and dart motifs in the entry door cornice, and the quoins (or false corner stones) surrounding the entry door. The overall style of the building, with its board-formed concrete surface and geometric shape, provides a sense of continuity with the other International style administrative buildings in the district. This view shows the hospital under construction in 1937.
