Fifty years earlier, Georgia Tech had been cut off from its one-time neighbor to the east – Midtown Atlanta – by construction of the I-75/85 Connector, a major transportation artery that had grown ever wider. After the Olympics, it became clear that bridging the physical gap between Georgia Tech and Midtown Atlanta could create a wealth of opportunities for both communities. , Following a 2001 groundbreaking, the 1.4 million square-foot mixed-use Technology Square opened in the fall of 2003. Today it serves as a “Main Street” for the university, with office and academic space, restaurants, retail, housing and a hotel. , [Caption] Before the construction of Tech Square, 2001.
