The Argyle was a passenger and freight steamer that docked at Sydenham Harbour in the early 1900’s. It operated between Toronto and Cobourg with stops in Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville. The return fare from Oshawa to Toronto was $1.00. Evening cruises and excursions to Niagara-on-the-Lake were popular summer activities.

1. The steamer Argyle docked at Port Oshawa, picking up passengers. Excerpt:
The photo shows the Argyle, a passenger steamer, moored at the Oshawa pier. The goods shed and ticket offices were located in the building at the end of the quay, to the right of the photo. The normal fare to Toronto was seventy-five cents for a return ticket. Horse-drawn coal wagons used the railroad tracks to load coal, which was used to power the ship. The Argyle was operated by the Lake Ontario Navigation Company in Toronto. (2/15/2022) A mural depicting Oshawa’s harbour a century ago and one of dozens commissioned in the 1990s to help beautify the city is being ‘de-commissioned’ on the request of the building owner. “On the Lake (The Argyle),” which was created in 1995 by Welland artist Ross Beard, is a 59 X 11-foot mural depicting the harbour around 1910 and the Argyle steamship, which ran regular routes between Whitby and Oshawa and Kingston beginning in 1907.(Submitted on July 9, 2023, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
