1. Kentucky Native, Laura White Marker
Inscription. Kentucky native, Laura White, designed the Old First Christian Church on 17th Street in Ashland. It was built in 1890 in the Gothic Style at a cost of $6000. Avoiding post-Civil War unrest, Laura's father, Dougherty White, sent his wife and daughter to be near Laura's sister, Mrs. S.W. Hager, whose husband was then mayor of Ashland. Laura, who studied architecture at the Sorbonne, later returned home to Owensboro, where she served as an educator and surveyor.
