Official Disposal Policy
On June 22, 1942, the Flag Code became Public Law 77-623, Chapter 435. This code states that "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." This code establishes the flag of the United States of America as a living symbol of freedom which should be retired with dignity.

Where Does My Flag Go?
When you place a damaged American Flag in this box, you can be certain it will be retired appropriately. American Legion Post No. 28, in Perrysburg, Ohio, collects flags in a timely manner from this box. There is no need to notify anyone when you place a flag into this container. Once your flag is in the hands of a legionnaire, it will be treated respectfully until the time of its retirement. Flags placed in this box are retired by fire, which insures that flags determined improper to represent the United States of America will never be flown again.
