1. Capstan Marker
Inscription. This capstan made the job of hauling heavily loaded ropes easier; sailors would "walk the capstan 'round," pushing the wooden capstan bars. The line under load is turned around the capstan itself like a giant winch. The pawls, the tooth-like bits of metal that click into the notches at the bottom of the capstan, help prevent the capstan from reversing direction.
