Cargo Hatches. South Street Seaport Museum. Wavertree has four cargo hatches that provide access to the cargo hold. Nearly all of Wavertree's space is dedicated to cargo. In her working life, Wavertree carried all varieties of bulk cargoes such as grain, coal, rice, timber, kerosene, nitrate, and jute (plant fiber used to make burlap). Hatches were closed with heavy wooden hatch boards, over which a waxed or tarred tarpaulin was stretched. The hatch tarp was rolled around an iron "batten" at the edges and wedged into place. This method of securing the tarp to keep seawater out is "battening the hatches."
