Inscription.
"The dam and feeder are said to be in good condition. This furnishes all the extra water needed between this point and Cleveland … and has always been ample."
Ohio Canal Division Reports, 1880

Soon after this canal section opened in 1827, engineers built the Pinery Dam and Brecksville Feeder. This channel carries water from the Cuyahoga River into the canal at Lock 36. Originally the additional water maintained a proper depth for canal boats. Today this feeder provides water to the longest intact section of the Ohio & Erie Canal, a national historic landmark.

This photograph, taken in 1907 from the large hill to your left, shows the three bodies of water here. On the far side of today's trail bridge, notice the remnants of Lock 36. The lock chamber reportedly was filled when the Brecksville-Northfield High-Level Bridge was built in the 1930s.
