1987
Vortex opened at the back of the park on land previously occupied by The Bat. The towering new attraction was the tallest of its kind in the world and was designed exclusively for Kings Island. This twisted mess of steel also had more inversions than any other roller coaster in existence, turning riders upside-down a staggering six times.

With the new scream-machine, The Demon - which only featured a single loop - was rendered RODE obsolete and retired at the end of the season. The ride's removal allowed for an exciting new ride to be added the following year.

1988
Amazon Falls, marketed as "the world's most exciting drop of water", made a splash. Boatloads of riders plunged down a 45-foot drop into a pool of water, creating a massive wave.

After the summer season ended, over 1,300 feet of track was rerouted on the Kings Island and Miami Valley Railroad to accommodate a large expansion to the park.

1989
A new water park named WaterWorks opened adjacent to Kings Island. The wet and wild area could be reached by a pathway or by hopping aboard the park railroad.

The original WaterWorks PlusAWet New line-up included a mixture of thrilling body slides (like Fastracks and Ultra Twister), tube slides (Sidewinder), and a serene lazy river (Kings Mill Run), as well

as a children's play area.

1990
WaterWorks became even wetter with Rushing River, a first-of-its-kind family raft slide. The 700-foot-long ride took advantage of the area's hilly terrain.

Flight Commander took flight in Coney Mall. The unique thrill ride enabled its passengers to control their own ride vehicle as they were rotated around a 60-foot tower.

1991
Adventure Express, a runaway mine train roller coaster, made its debut. It offered twists, turns, and four themed tunnels, including an enclosed lift hill with nine stone warriors!
