1997 - 2001
Kings Island
1997
WaterWorks was expanded with Surfside Bay, a new 600,000 gallon wave pool. Nearby, the new Buccaneer Island play area opened. It included a large pirate ship with five miniature slides and several water jets and cannons.
The Skylab ride in Coney Mall was retired after the 1997 season.
1998
Hanna-Barbera Land was expanded with three new rides that parents and children could ride together: Scooby's Ghoster Coaster (a junior suspended roller coaster), Atom Ant's Airways (an up-and-down children's ride), and Yogi's Skytours (miniature helicopters elevated above the area).
A surfing simulator, WipeOut Beach, was added to WaterWorks. In Coney Mall, James Bond 007: A License to Thrill made its debut. The exciting new film featured fiery explosions, jet skis, and thrilling car chases.
1999
Adventure Village was transformed into the new Paramount Action Zone. The area was modeled off of a studio backlot and included mega thrill rides: a forward-and-backward inverted looping roller coaster named Face/Off, and the world's tallest gyro drop, Drop Zone.
A large new wooden roller coaster was announced in May. Visitors to the park in 1999 were able to watch the behemoth of a ride slowly rise.
2000
Son of Beast, a massive new wooden roller coaster, made its highly-anticipated debut in Paramount Action Zone. It was taller, faster, and larger than any other wooden roller coaster that had come before it. Son of Beast was also the first and only modern wooden ride to include an inversion: a 118-foot tall vertical loop.
2001
Nickelodeon Splat City and the edge of Rivertown were merged into one new area, Nickelodeon Central. The park's newest land included a log flume, Wild Thornberrys River Adventure, and a first-of-its-kind children's inverted roller coaster, Rugrats Runaway Reptar.
A new 3D film, 7th Portal, debuted in the Paramount Action FX Theater. The five-minute adventure included the first new superheroes that comic book writer Stan Lee had created in 30 years.
After 18 seasons of operation, King Cobra was retired at the end of the 2001 season.
