Kostverlorenkade
For extra drainage of the excess water from the Haarlemmermeer, the Rhineland water board decided - against Amsterdam's wishes - to install extra locks in the Spaarndammerdijk and to dig the “Kostverloren” waterway. After fierce protest, the passage had to be closed and the expenditure for the project was considered to be 'wasted money' or a 'lost cost'.
