Early West End Hotels
Quick Facts: Two hotels patronized by users of Crystal Palace and Victoria Park
The opening of the Crystal Palace on the Victoria Park grounds in 1860 inspired West End population growth and the creation of new businesses. Two hotels were established, one at King St. W. and Locke St., and the other at Locke St. and Peter St. They were supplied by the Crystal Palace Brewery located nearby on the south side of King St., just west of Margaret St.
Locke and Peter Streets
- 1879 - called Crystal Palace Hotel, owned by John Duffy.
- 1892 - called Victoria Park View Hotel after demolition of Crystal Palace (1890).
- 1896-1918 - name changed to Park View Hotel.
- Post 1918 - building has hosted many businesses including the Park Grocery store and a private residence.
King W. and Locke Streets
- 1862 - Joseph Kent established hotel and grocery store at King and Pearl Streets.
- 1864 - hotel moved to King and Locke Streets.
- 1891 - name changed to Park Hotel by owner John Cooper, used by ball teams from Victoria Park and West End Pleasure Club.
Hotel functioned at this site for more than 150 years.
