Inscription. Folklore linked Frenchtown to settlers who emigrated to the Lafayette Land Grant and later moved to town. Census and property records contradict this story. Researcher Julianne Hare advances two other possibilities. When the area was first platted as the Northern Addition, merchant Perez Brocaw purchased several lots. Brocaw was from Frenchtown, New Jersey - a community known for its abolitionist views and ties to the AME Church. Mulatto carpenter Jourdan Frenchy built several structures in the neighborhood, perhaps prompting folks to refer to the area as "Frenchy's town". Whatever the origin of its name, Frenchtown has been occupied predominantly by African Americans since the end of the Civil War.
