Inscription. The Persian Gulf War of 1991 was fought between Iraq and a coalition of 39 countries. The United States government called the war "Operation Desert Storm”. The coalition had formed after Iraq invaded Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990. On November 29, 1990, The United Nations Security Council authorizes the use of force if Iraq did not withdraw its forces. On January 17, 1991, the coalition began bombing Iraqi military and industrial targets. In late February, the coalition launched a massive ground attack into Kuwait and southern Iraq and quickly defeated the Iraqis. Coalition military operations ended after 100 hours of ground attacks. On Feb 28, 1991 President George H. Bush ordered a cease fire.
