1. World War II Marker
Inscription. This war started on September 1, 1939 when Germany under the command of dictator Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. The United States did not enter the war until Japan attacked military bases at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii December 7, 1941. Germany, Italy, Japan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Slovakia formed an alliance known as the Axis. The United States, United Kingdom, China, and the Soviet Union, called the “Allies” were the major powers fighting the Axis. By wars end a total of 50 nations were members of the Allies. A series of bloody battles in the Pacific brought the Allies to Japan's doorstep by the summer of 1945. Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945, and Japan on Sept. 2, 1945.
