Inscription. Maple sugaring's history is traced to American Indians, who would slash a maple tree and collect the sap dripping out. The sap was poured into a hollowed-out log. Heated rocks were added to evaporate the sap's water, leaving sugar behind. Pioneers used the process passed down from American Indians, but their methods changed over time. Tools like hand augers tapped trees and spiles drained the sap into buckets. Cooper and iron pots were used to boil sap over an open fire, producing maple syrup. Early Twinsburg settlers relied on local maple sugar production because imported supplies were limited. In 1840, Ohio was the country's largest producer of maple sugar and syrup. Ohio remains a top producer today.
