1846 - First observed by Galle and d'Arrest based on predictions made by independent calculations of La Verrier and Adams. It is the only major planet to be discovered using mathematical calculations.
Name History
Named by La Verrier for the Roman God of the Sea, possibly because of its vivid blue hue.
